I’ve lived in all corners of Sydney, but nowhere have I found quite the contrast, character and community as in Glebe. It all makes for a fascinating place to call home. I often find myself wondering “What’s their story?” That's what I'm setting out to discover, and to share stories about the people, places, characters and curiosities that make Glebe what it is. So, hello - and welcome to the first edition of The Rag!
This Week in Glebe
A century more for Bay St Depot
The City of Sydney is redeveloping its Bay St depot near Blackwattle Bay in Ultimo, replacing the current building with a new facility designed to last a century. The depot has operated on the site for over 100 years, supporting the council's cleansing, waste and maintenance crews. Council approved a stage 1 DA in late 2025, and Andrew Burges Architects and Second Edition won the design competition. Plans include a landscaped raingarden, bricks reused from the existing structure, and flexible workspaces meant to adapt as technology changes.
P.S. If you’re a City of Sydney resident, you can visit the recycling pop-up around the corner from the depot on Tuesdays from 2pm–7pm to drop off things that don’t belong in your household bins, including polystyrene, small electronics, batteries and unwearable clothes. (Source: Inside Local Govt)

Glebe Art Show opens next Thursday
I've been looking forward to this one. The 2026 Glebe Art Show runs next Thursday 15 October to Sunday 25 October at Harold Park Community Hall in the Tramsheds. The Glebe Society has sponsored a $500 Character of Glebe Prize for work that best captures the spirit of Glebe and Forest Lodge. See you there!
The last stop of the last Sydney tram
If you've walked into Tramsheds and glanced at the old tram near the entrance without thinking much of it, here's a reason to look again. Tram 1995 was the very last tram to operate on the Sydney system, with the final service running on 25 February 1961. A nice piece of history on the way to get coffee.
The 431 before it was the 431. An electric tram c.1905. From Max Solling's Grandeur and Grit: a history of Glebe
Red-bellied black snake spotted on Forsyth St
A local reported seeing a red-bellied black snake crossing Forsyth St near Avona Ave on Sunday, sliding into foliage near the units at 2A. FYI Red-bellied blacks are venomous but generally shy and will retreat if left alone. Take care around that stretch, especially with dogs and babies. If you spot a snake you're worried about, you can report it to WIRES. (Source: Glebe Locals FB Group)
As if the incline wasn't enough to avoid Forsyth St. Now we've got snakes!
