Editor's Note

Hello from a mid-spring Glebe! The trees and flowers are in full bloom along GPR, but the skies seem to have missed the memo about brightening up. The Glebe Art Show is under way at Tramsheds, though, so I’m hoping to bring a bit of that colour next week. As someone who paints (badly), I’ll be there taking notes. Report back next week :)

Quick read this week. I'll be working on an interview or two in coming editions. Anyone you think I should reach out to learn their story? Hit reply and let me know!

This Week in Glebe

Last greyhound races at Wentworth Park tonight

94 years of Greyhound racing at Wentworth Park ends for good tonight. The state government plans to return the site as public parkland, and has committed $10 million to move racing to other tracks. For some locals it's the end of an era, for others it's long overdue. Organisers are holding a rally at Millar Reserve from 5pm, just before the final races. I'll be curious to see what shape the parkland conversation takes from here. (Source: NSW Ministerial Release)

Can you spot Me-Mel?

The NSW Government has unveiled the proposed design for a new ferry wharf at the Sydney Fish Market, with plans to start site work in late 2026 and ferry services to Barangaroo expected in late 2027. The wharf forms part of a $70 million investment in transport access to the Fish Market.

In the meantime, Me-Mel (Sydney's smallest commuter ferry) will happily continue to skipper us from Blackwattle Bay to Barangaroo. (Source: Ministerial media release)

City of Sydney to bring back physical parking tickets

The NSW Government has made the City of Sydney switch from digital parking fines back to physical tickets, according to a post from Councillor Philippa Scott. The logic, as Scott put it: if you've done the wrong thing, you should at least know straight away. (Source: Glebe Locals FB Group)

Forsyth St's red-belly wasn't a local

Update from my street: a snake catcher caught that red-bellied black snake on Forsyth St and took it away safely. Turns out it wasn't a Glebe local at all. The snake catcher reckons it crawled up under someone's car on a long-weekend trip and rode all the way back to the suburb, then turned up under another car this week. Someone working a few doors down helped with the catch.

One less thing to watch your step for on the walk to the Tocky.

Glebe’s spring helicopters are hoverflies

Those tiny striped helicopters hovering around your flowers this spring aren’t bees or wasps. They’re hoverflies. The adults pollinate, the larvae eat aphids, and their numbers often peak in early spring, so keep an eye out. Also worth a look on warm evenings: Bogong moths feeding on bottlebrush flowers. They’re having a bumper year, and it’s wonderful to see them back in such numbers.

Thanks to Tanya for this submission. Some of you may remember her from the Glebe Society biodiversity lecture at Glebe Library last year. You can read more of her work on The Conversation. (Source: Tanya)
